Surprise arrival for prospective students on Offer Holder Day

Prospective Animal students were able to witness the arrival of a new born calf during the Offer Holder Day earlier this month.

Senior lecturer Emma White was holding a cow signalling workshop for the group of 10 prospective students when she noticed a heifer had gone into labour. The heifer was having trouble calving due to the size of the calf and with it being her first. Student ambassador Pete Reis was also present and told how the amniotic sac was visible but not yet broken. With the heifer in some distress, Emma decided to intervene. Pete went to get the calving aid to assist however whilst he was away, Emma had calved the heifer herself and a healthy Friesian Holstein bull calf was born.

The prospective students are expected the enrol on either Animal Health and Welfare or Animal Management and Welfare courses in September and were attending the day to get a feel for what their courses will involve.
